The invitation to contribute on Introduction to this book was a very welcome one, partly because it gives me an opportunity to record how much all of us who have an interest in the history of North East England owe to the two authors. Their many years of work in local libaries and archives has equipped them with an encyclopaedic knowledge of local sources, and this knowledge has always been generously deployed for the benefit of others working in this field. No doubt much of the evidence gathered here has been sought for this specific purpose, but the diverse sources could only have been brought together by individuals already expert in the varied materials relating to the region's history.
